During the 2020 spring lockdown I captured the emotions of a range of people in small paintings. Each week, I asked different groups of friends to share words and colours about how they felt.
The themes that emerged were translated into paintings, that were shared on social media so that people could vote for their favourites. The preferred paintings were kept and brought together into a book that captures this moment in time.
You can buy the book on the link above (15% of sales go to Farnham Food Bank and other charities). Each painting is for sale individually.

During the 2020 spring lockdown due to COVID-19 I captured the emotions of a range of people in small paintings.
Each week, for 14 weeks, from 23 March to 28 June 2020, I asked different groups of friends to share words and colours about how they felt.
I then translated the themes that emerged into paintings on small boards. These were shared on social media and people voted for their favourite paintings, which were kept.
These small paintings (15x15cm boards) come together to form a patchwork of emotions and experiences and work separately capturing individual emotions.
Each painting is a small gem that is for sale individually.

These large drypoint etchings depict maps of Alaska and the Yukon. Within them are landscapes, plants and lichens and aerial views. They are windows on the world of the map. The prints within prints reflect the tension between humans (the map) and nature asking which is on top, or could they be working in harmony?

A series of paintings based on a trip to Alaska and the Yukon. Landscapes and maps combine into abstract paintings. The maps represent the imprint of humans on the environment, with a focus on particular places. Places like the Kaskawulsh Glacier where, due to climate change, the glacier has shrunk to such an extent that the water flows into a different valley - depriving communities and nature of water.

The map room is a collection of paintings that explore social and environmental issues through abstract paintings of maps. They seek to interpret the irrefutable bonds we have with our planet and inspire engagement with the community at large.
A recent publication ‘Pandemonium’ describes the work from the show of the same name at PZ Gallery:
“[She] has turned this sense of cartography into a philosophical position whereby she makes a stand in her bond with the planet---seen at a distance as a shoreline in Alaska or great rift in Ethiopia; or up close as in the bird’s eye view of her local park.
These map-makings are fragments only, often beautifully coloured; but like jigsaw pieces they hint at a bigger picture and they too ask the ecological and existential question, ‘What is our relationship with the world?’ A question never more prescient than now.”
The map room paintings explore different themes in vivid colours. The Farnham maps explore how built up areas in the town have changed over the years. The large dark areas on the paintings show where housing is now, with the collaged white areas comparing that with buildings from 1898. A set of seven smaller maps show places where a particular issue or solution manifests - the last white rhino in Kenya, or the protection of carbon capturing seagrass in Madagascar.
Many of these maps are currently on show in Kent through @frickletonfineart

Featured at the PZ Gallery, Penzance - bringing the paintings on social issues and solutions together
As part of the map room I was curious to know how people were responding to the issues presented and also what they would want to see in a map room.
I did two things. Asked people to put words on a global map (featured) that articulated their response to the paintings. I also asked visitors to complete a postcard asking ‘What issue, emotion or experience would you like to see captured in a map?’ and where that map would be. These postcards have formed the basis of my next body of work.
The aim was to create a safe space to view the art and engage with the issues.
